X stands for eXperimental, and experimentation is the single purpose of the X-planes.
Some of the X-planes were designed for speed and high altitude, others to prove aerodynamic principles, and others as test beds for next-generation power plants. The pilots that flew the X-planes include the famous and the unfamiliar, include Charles "Chuck" Yeager, Neil Armstrong, William J. "Pete" Knight, Frank "Pete" Everest, Scott Crossfield, and others. These men risked, and sometimes lost, their lives in the quest for speed, altitude and knowledge. Most of these planes were flown from Muroc Air Field, later named Edwards Air Force Base. This site was selected for its expansive, rock-hard dry lakebed surface, clear skies and isolation from populated areas. Though the X-planes do
